What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma can be a condition that causes damage to the optic nerve of the eye from high pressure. Fluid buildup around the eye’s front can cause this. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common type of glaucoma, accounts for at least 90% all cases. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, 3 million Americans currently live with glaucoma, yet only 50% of these individuals are aware that they have the condition.

These are some of the most common symptoms.

  • Blind spots
  • Blurred vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Eye pain
  • Eyes are red
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting
  • Vision disturbances

What can medical marijuana do to treat glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a condition where the optic nerve is damaged. This can often lead to partial or complete blindness. The only way to prevent vision loss and control glaucoma is to reduce your IOP. Glaucoma can be treated by your ophthalmologist with prescription eye drops, or surgery depending on its severity.

Glaucoma is often caused by intraocular pressure, which medical marijuana reduces effectively. It has been proven to be an effective treatment for glaucoma symptoms.

Although marijuana can reduce intraocular pressure, its effects are only temporary (roughly four hours). Products can deliver all the medicinal benefits of marijuana without the associated high. These products make extensive use CBD, a compound found in marijuana. It does not have any psychoactive effects. Medical marijuana is safe and can be used all day, without the need for a high.

Although the effects of one-time use of medical marijuana may not last for long, they do not negate their effectiveness in improving quality of life for patients suffering from glaucoma. Medical marijuana can provide relief for other symptoms such as nausea, pain, and headaches.

There are also many factors that can affect the quality of cannabis edibles such as how long the product has been sitting in stock, how long it’s been since production was completed, and how much is left over after being packaged for sale.
